Herbs straight out of your garden can make the best cocktail garnish

One of the greatest elements of summer is the garden–may it be on a rooftop or balcony, in a backyard or wherever else the sun shines. There’s nothing like grabbing a ripe tomato from your garden and putting it directly into a salad. But summer’s spoils are not just relegated to the dinner table. Herbs and weeds, like basil and mint, are popular choices for cocktails as they bring out flavors in your drink that might otherwise go unnoticed. Many herbs match well with gin, given the botanical components that come naturally in the liquor. Rosemary, with its resinous flavor, is no exception. In fact, it’s a perfect match.

Rosemary Gin Fizz

Gin, fresh lemon juice, a dash of simple syrup, soda water and a little rosemary is a great way to quench a late afternoon thirst. For the lazy man version, use lemonade. Purists, though, will either use fresh lemon juice and simple syrup, or rosemary syrup for a more distinct herbal flavor. I’ve included the standard recipe below, but modifications are always encouraged.

—4-inch sprig of rosemary

—2 ounces gin (or vodka if you truly detest gin)

—1 ounce lemon juice

—1 ounce simple syrup to taste

—Dash of angostura or bitter of choice (optional)

—2 to 4 ounces club soda

—Small sprig of rosemary and lemon slice for garnish

In a cocktail shaker, muddle rosemary with gin, lemon juice and simple syrup. After muddling, add ice to shaker and shake for 10 seconds.

Fill a highball or Collins glass with ice cubes.

Strain liquid into the glass, halfway up, and add soda; stir and garnish with rosemary sprig and lemon slice.

Note: This beverage can be made without alcohol and still make for a great libation.
