The Good Life
Nightlife:
Speakeasies. They are, by definition, a little anachronistic. Although Prohibition ended long ago, drinking in secretive elegance will never really go out of style. Today’s speakeasy-style bars use the secretiveness that was necessary for their Prohibition-era predecessors to give imbibers a feeling of exclusivity, and they often add vintage-inspired uniforms and accoutrements to give one a feeling of old-fashioned formality. These bars also happen to be at the center of a national resurgence of interest in serious, creative cocktails, and the quality of the drinks served at these clandestine establishments can make one feel like the holder of an important secret... The “Mad Men” craze sparked the return of a number of retro trends. Bartenders are finally pouring proper cocktails and women’s sheaths and pencil skirts are returning to store shelves.  Ah, summer. It’s the season of BBQs, baseball and the beach. While attending a soiree involving any of those three things is sure to be fun, few summertime events can compete with sitting on a picnic blanket under the stars with your sexy girlfriend, cold beer in hand, listening to the sounds of your favorite band wafting through the warm breeze. Of course, enclosed, air-conditioned arenas usually have better acoustics, but it’s more special taking in a concert at an open-air amphitheatre. Still a skeptic? Take a moment to watch any concert video from Denver’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre—U2, The Grateful Dead, The Dave Matthews Band—and you’ll surely be convinced... Read More
Bleau Bar, the trendy lobby bar at Miami Beach’s newly renovated Fontainebleau hotel makes me think of Woody Allen’s 2000 movie Small Time Crooks. In the movie, a group of knuckle-headed bandits rent a storefront in order to tunnel a passageway into a nearby bank. To avoid suspicion, the wives of two of the bandits open a bakery selling cookies. The bandits screw up everything but the cookie sales unexpectedly become a massive sensation, sending them to easy street—albeit for a short time.It would seem that Fontainebleau probably expected more fanfare for their new, ultra-chic, ultra-exclusive nightclub LIV than their lobby bar. In fairness, Bleau Bar is no ordinary lobby bar and Fontainebleau is no ordinary hotel... Read More
Did you ever go to Disneyland as a child? You know, back in the days when it was still good? Back when it was still possible for a 10-year-old to get excited about animatronic pirates. Do you remember the feeling—the pure joy—when you started down that first drop on Space Mountain? Acropolis doesn’t call itself “The Happiest Place on Earth,” but it should. It gives grown men moments of that giddy, childish, Disneyland in the 1970s and ’80s excitement... Read More
