We may only be a few days into the new year, but it's never too early to look ahead to the Super Bowl. This year's big game is slated for February 5, but the playoffs are less than a week away, so now's the time to look into what you'll be serving your fellow fanatics. Fortunately for you, with a little foresight and extra planning, you'll be able to knock their socks off with some southern-style cooking.
Sure, you could set out some Doritos, order a few pizzas from Domino's and call it good. Or you could break out a hearty helpin' of the world's best ribs, ordered direct from Memphis, the nation's epicenter of all things grilled. Several of the city's best known BBQers now offer their menus online, serving up everything from ribs to pulled pork and secret sauces.
Among them is Memphis-based Neely's Bar-B-Que. It first opened in 1988 and has been racking up accolades ever since. Co-founders Pat and Gina Neely have seen the business grow from a single diner to a beloved local institution that has spawned several locations and two shows on the Food Network. The couple's first cookbook, "Down Home with the Neelys," landed on the New York Times' best sellers list in 2009.
Since you probably don't live anywhere near the company's four restaurants in Tennessee (and kudos to the lucky foodies who do), ordering from their online store is the next best thing. There you'll find items like a slow-cooked, Texas-style brisket capable of conquering the grumbling guts of 12-15 people and a 10 slab rib combo that can feed a small army. The pulled-pork "Pig Feast" is a great alternative if ribs aren't your thing.
But if you're hunting for a little more variety, look no further than the Memphis Family combo. It comes with three slabs of St Louis-style spareribs, basted and smoked the old-fashioned way with Hickory wood, along with three slow-cooked chicken halves dripping in sauce and seasoning. Along with the two bottles of Original Neely's BBQ sauce that are included, there's enough southern cooking in this bad boy to sate the appetites of a dozen people or more.
The online store also has side-items like beans, sauces, potato salad and the family's legendary BBQ spaghetti. Each item is carefully prepared, frozen and packed in an ice-filled cooler for overnight or two day delivery. Looking ahead to the Super Bowl, all of this can keep for three to six months in a freezer.
A quick word of warning though: napkins aren't included and you'll need plenty of 'em!
